RUGBY LEAGUE’S NIGHT OF NIGHTS – ORIGIN 1 2014: PHIL STALEY’S THOUGHTS ON SPORTS

ori 1

We’re just hours away now from one of the biggest events in the sporting universe. The best rugby league players on the planet are at Lang Park in Brisbane for the 100th State of Origin game. With eight consecutive series wins, Queensland go into this series as firm favourites, but you can’t ever write New South Wales off. Earlier today, Queensland coach Mal Meninga was honoured with the unveiling of a statue of him at the ground, alongside statues of “King” Wally Lewis and Darren Lockyer.

You’ll hear Origin 1 live on ABC Far North – and to get you in the mood, here’s our Origin special edition of Phil Staley’s Thoughts on Sports

STATE OF ORIGIN 2014 – CAN NSW BREAK IT’S LONG DROUGHT? – PHIL STALEY’S THOUGHTS ON SPORTS

ori 1

Next Wednesday night, Australian rugby league celebrates a major milestone – the 100th State of Origin match. It’s hard now to recall how different the game was back then, prior to 1980, when it was a Sydney-centric affair that thrived on Queensland talent but did little to encourage fans north of the Tweed.

Queensland won that first game, with major contributions from Chris Close and Mal Meninga – and a great interstate sporting rivalry began, and League was on its way to becoming what it is today – the NRL.

It’s equally hard to remember the last time New South Wales won an Origin series – are they any chance this year? We explore that question on this week’s Phil Staley’s Thoughts on Sports, and reflect on the life of Australian motor sport legend Sir Jack Brabham.
