Sometimes a song is too racy for radio, or too political, and it gets banned from airplay. Swearing, incitement, sex, there’s lots of reasons a song might get banned.
The late Loretta Lynn had songs banned many times, in the conservative US heartland where there’s only two kinds of music, country, and western.
Loretta was socially conservative, and probably politically too. And yet she wrote and sang songs about contraception, abusive men, domestic violence, and equal rights.
Depending who you ask, those kind of songs got Loretta banned from radio between eight and 14 times. It didn’t seem to do her any harm. Most of those songs were big hits.
Loretta Lynn died in October. She was 90.
