THE MUSIC OF BRAZIL – TONY HILLIER’S WORLD CUP OF MUSIC

The world has been watching Brazil around the clock for a couple of weeks – as the football World Cup continues. And Brazil plays the round ball game with great style, skill and enthusiasm. This week’s World of Music reminds us that the powerhouse of South American soccer also plays music with similar flair and élan.

Listen to Tony Hillier present the music of Brazil.

LEGENDARY CAIRNS BAND SNAKE GULLY IN ACTION AT NEW LOCAL VENUE TONIGHT

Tony Hillier

Tony Hillier

Our local music man Tony Hillier has been part of the far north Queensland music scene for decades now, as a journalist, publisher, supporter and as a musician. One of his many musical enterprises is Snake Gully – a band that began in 1987 – and they’ll be performing tonight at a new Cairns music venue – McGinty’s.

Snake Gully has a long and colourful history – tonight past members Steve Gilbert, Alan Jones and Dave Martin will be on stage for what’s billed as a very entertaining re-union gig.

And Tony has exciting World Cup soccer related news of his other band, Kamerunga.

Check out Kamerunga’s contribution to the World Cup Samba of the World campaign at

WHAT AN AMAZING WEEK! WORLD CUP HOCKEY & SOCCER – AND ORIGIN! PHIL STALEY’S THOUGHTS ON SPORTS

_MG_7611

Australians love their sport – but I reckon no-one loves their sport quite like our Phil Staley. Indoor, outdoor, winter summer or somewhere in between – Phil loves it all. Stand at his desk here at ABC Far North and you get the feeling you’ve just run on to Lang Park or the MCG. Phil has a gift for talking about sport in a way that even people who can’t stand sport will enjoy.

He gets past the hype and the stats to the magic ingredient that makes sport so compelling – the people who play it and the people who love it. Phil talks about sport each Friday on ABC Far North at 5:15pm – now you can tune in online as well. Phil’s Thoughts on Sports are podcast too – search Phil Staley in your podcast app.

This week: the end of an era in rugby league State of Origin: Socceroos can be proud of their performance at the World Cup: two far north Queensland lads shine in US basketball: and how will the North Queensland Cowboys go against Newcastle on Monday night? LISTEN here

A PROJECT TO HELP THE ENDANGERED NORTHERN BETTONG – AND YOU CAN GET INVOLVED

Meet the northern bettongbettongia tropica – a small, shy marsupial somewhere between a kangaroo and a rodent. They live in relatively small pockets of far north Queensland, they’re endangered, and they could do with your help.

A project is getting underway to help conserve the northern bettong – involving James Cook University, WWF Australia, Queensland Parks and Wildlife and others. And there’s a role for you, if you’d like to volunteer some time, exploring bettong habitats here in FNQ and gathering information about their health, population numbers and the pressures on their preferred homes on the border of wet and dry forest areas.

Dr Sandra Abell – from James Cook University – will be talking about the project on Thursday night (June 5) at the Malanda Hotel at 7.30pm – the Tree-Kangaroo & Mammal Group is putting the event on and would love to see you there.
And you can listen to my interview with Sandra Abell here
