Thursday is International Volunteer Day – when we recognise the vital contribution volunteers make to our communities, and hopefully encourage a few more people to consider giving their time and energy for good causes. By way of inspiration, let me introduce you to Julie Martin. Julie is 83 this year, and spends her evenings volunteering at Harald’s House in Cairns. Harald Falge established Harald’s House – he’s been working tirelessly for homeless kids in far north Queensland since 1991.
Julie says volunteering keeps her feeling young, and it’s much more rewarding than sitting at home in front of the TV. She listens to the teenagers who have found a home at Harald’s House, she encourages them, sharing her life experiences, the things a parent might do, things many of these kids have never experienced before. And Harald Falge says Harald’s House could not survive without volunteers – he knows what a rare and precious thing volunteering is these days. He says Julie is a treasure.
